Let Your Nerd Out!

As I am getting ready to go back to college for the second year, I am again considering how wonderful it is to be a nerd. Where can the jocks go? And how far can the preps get? No my friends, the future is in the nerds. Unite my fellow nerds!

Of course everyone has their place in this life, and we should not try to be a nerd if we are not one. My dearest sister is a hardcore jock and we probably would not be friends were we not related, but I love her for the fact that we have taught each other to appreciate our own individualities and strengths. I just often prefer the company of the nerdy.

Nerd can signify a whole group of people that are not jocks, preps, emos, skater, etc, but nerd is also a specific class within that group. To be called a nerd is NOT an insult; a nerd is smart, enjoys school for learning’s sake, can entertain themselves with either their calculator or dictionary, can see the appeal of fantasy and sci-fi but doesn’t necessarily get into it themselves, and is more likely to know where the library is than the bowling alley. They are more sociable, more fashionable, and can even be more into sports than the normal person may think (coke bottle glasses optional). The key to being a nerd is that your brain is your most valuable asset, no matter if you apply it to music, the arts, math, literature, or science.

Geeks are a lesser class of nerd, and while they may not know where the bowling alley is, they probably know where the library is for the computers. They are less socially adept than the nerds and get more into the fantasy and sci-fi, and have a better chance of wearing white socks or high-water pants. It is a fine but definite line between nerd and geek, but it is not a total insult to be a geek either.

Dorks may be smart, but they don’t always use it constructively and are socially and fashionably awkward. Dorks are the ones that get into the fantasy and sci-fi hard-core, and can develop into the outcasts of society. Nerd and Geeks must be careful not to judge the Dork, however, because there but for the grace of God go they.

This is only my own observations and classification system, and while it is far from perfect, it is useful for the most part and most accurate with the Nerd/Geek/Dork group.

So do you wear glasses, quote Lord of the Rings, wonder what Cloud Strife's sword is made of, are great at Trivial Pursuit, or consider Professor Frink your hero? Or maybe there is more? Then embrace your inner nerd and shout out E=MC^2!!! I love nerds!

Comments:
Considering my utter obsession with fantasy (FF most certainly included), I must fall under the category of geek...because I hope I'm not dumb enough to be a dork. :D And I am slowly...SLOWLY pulling you into the pit that is titled "geek," my friend. Oh, yes. You cannot resist. That said, may I use this board to shout out my geekdom?

GO FMA!! GO FF IX!! GO LOTR!! GO VGM!!

Thankee. :D And thankee also for the insightful blog. I need to make my own one o' these days...mebbe before school starts...mebbe tomorrow!

A very nice little classification system. :) I do fit more into the nerd category, save for my obsession with sci-fi and fantasy. ;) Although I consider it to be a healthy addiction... others certainly may only see it as an abyss of pure and utter "geekdom." :D

Emily is definitely the coolest jock I know, and it's good to even see her let you nerdiness out every once and a while... even if it does scare her right back into her dominant personality. ;) Being siblings can cure or poison a vast amount of personality conflicts. Thank God they have only strengthened your relationship with your sister and hers with you.

The in-jokes in this post are also quite esoterically humorous! And I, for one, am very glad to hear you love nerds... otherwise I should suggest you shouldn't be courting one. ;)

Sincerely,
Josh, Proud to Be a Nerd As Well

I just realized...is that Simpson character wearing TWO pairs of glasses?!
