Nothing Gold Can Stay... but thankfully seasons change

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.

Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.

Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,

So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

I love this poem Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost. I always lamented the end of spring even more so once I read these poignant words. Yesterday we had an awesome rainstorm, and today there is the slightest hint of fall in the air, with some leaves already abandoning their trees. I am once again reminded of this poem, but not in a sad way so much as to be thankful that that terrible march of the seasons at least gives you another chance to see gold. True, it is not the gold of spring, but it is a richer, deeper gold--different, but still beautiful.

I also thought of this poem and the changing of the seasons today when my family left again. They are taking my little sister to her school in Chicago. The gold of our childhood spring has passed, but it is not entirely lamentable, I am finding. We will see each other again, sooner than we realize I'm sure, but hopefully we too will be richer, deeper, and better than when we parted.
